Vesper leaves after she gets a note from Mathis, and Bond finishes paying the bill, but realizes that something is 'off' about the note. Bond celebrates with Vesper, who is still off-put by Bond's earlier abrasive nature.

Le Chiffre, upset with the loss, immediately leaves the table. Through the tough game, another threat on his life, and a few risky bets, Bond comes out on top. After dinner, Bond and Vesper go to the casino where the showdown begins, the game is Baccarat and Bond is squaring up against Le Chiffre. Realizing what is happening Bond cuts off the pleasantries and talks about the assignment. That night, during the meal, Bond's stone cold exterior starts to melt as he and Vesper become more familiar. At the tables he meets another man whom he is working with, Felix Leiter an American from the CIA. Bond then returns to his room and prepares for a night of gambling. While walking down the sidewalk to his room, two men try to throw a bomb at James, but the bomb malfunctions and they kill themselves, Bond is left relatively unharmed. After brief conversation, Bond invites Vesper to dinner that night.

Not too long after, James meets the man and woman he will be working with, Mathis and Vesper.

The story begins in the casino as Bond builds up his funds before the showdown with Le Chiffre, also taking time to observe the target. The head of MI6, M, sends Bond to French casino Royale-les-Eaux to stop Le Chiffre from paying a debt to the terrorist organization SMERSH. After he achieves his second kill in the field, James Bond is awarded Double O status. Casino Royale, an action thriller, takes place around the same time period as it was written, summer in the mid-1900's.
